Them Crooked Vultures
Rock/metal supergroups spring up all the time, and for every one that
actually gets off the ground, there are many that are rumored or mentioned
that never come to pass.
So, when
Queens Of The Stone Age
mainman Josh Homme mentioned a possible project with Dave Grohl and
none other than legendary
Led Zeppelin
bassist John Paul Jones in 2005, surely many took the news with a grain
of salt.
Lo and behold, the project became a reality, oddly named Them Crooked
Vultures, releasing a debut album in late 2009.
Grohl had worked with Homme in the Queens previously, so it wasn't a
stretch for them to pair up again.
But getting Jones involved was quite a coup, as he's been out of the
spotlight for years.
Yet the album works -- it's very much a Homme-led effort, meaning it's
not a million miles away from later-period Queens, and musically doesn't
bear much resemblance to Jones' or Grohl's bands.
But all three contribute to the songwriting and all three sound pretty
invigorated here.
Who knows where this project will be in a few years time, but for now
this is an interesting band, and surely Queens Of The Stone Age
fans will latch on to this.
