Nirvana

Nirvana was, of course, one of the bands that precipitated the grunge scene of the early nineties. While many in the metal community disdain grunge and feel that the genre isn't really a metal genre per se (which, by itself, might be true), albums such as Nirvana's debut album Bleach owed much to punk and metal and thus warrants their inclusion here. Indeed, Bleach ranks with perhaps Tad's God's Balls as two of the most metallic of the early grunge albums. While Bleach laid the foundation for the band's career, it was of course the followup, 1991's Nevermind, that catapulted the band to superstardom, with lead single Smells Like Teen Spirit essentially the grunge rock/metal anthem of the year. Unfortunately the ride to the top would be a short one, as after a rushed compilation in Insecticide and a followup (In Utero) in 1993, Kurt Cobain's suicide in 1994 put an end to the band, though their legacy lives on. Drummer Dave Grohl went on to stardom in Foo Fighters (and, on a more metallic note, put out the excellent Probot album).
