Kyuss

Now regarded as one of the main innovators in the field of stoner rock, Kyuss carved a niche for themselves with their highly unique brand of sludgy guitars and psychedelic, 70's overtones -- it can be safely said that while many bands sound like Kyuss, none really have captured the Kyuss spirit completely. After debuting with the not-critically-acclaimed Wretch, the band hooked up with Masters Of Reality frontman Chris Goss as producer, rose to prominence with the Blues For The Red Sun album, and continued developing their very distinctive style up until the excellent And The Circus Left Town in 1995. Sadly, the band broke up soon afterward, due to disillusionment over less-than-successful sales. There have been many post-Kyuss bands that resulted from the split, with guitarist Josh Homme's Queens Of The Stone Age being the most well-known. Throughout the intervening years there have been rumors of possible reformations (all unfounded), and additionally Homme in particular has been uninterested in reuniting the band, preferring to keep the band's legacy intact. In late November 2010, the other three Blues-era members recruited a new guitarist and toured in 2011 as Kyuss Lives! After some legal wranglings, the name of that new group has now been changed to Vista Chino, so Kyuss, in a sense, lives on.
