Imperial Triumphant

Since their formation in 2005, New York's Imperial Triumphant has been cementing their status as a standout avant-garde black metal band, with an increasing reliance on jazz, dissonance, and general non-conformity -- by the time of releases such as Alphaville the black influences are almost (but not quite) in the background. It's twisted and intense to be sure, but beautifully performed, as they seem to embody the dark underbelly of their home town. Like many bands that are described as either "extreme" or "avant-garde" (or, as in this case, both), their likeability might be limited -- this isn't for the casual fan, but for some, they definitely hit the sweet spot.
