Thunderstick

The enigmatic figure known as Thunderstick (real name Barry Purkis) had a cup of coffe with Iron Maiden in that band's infancy, but he made a real name for himself when he joined Samson for that band's first three albums during the rise of the NWOBHM movement. His hyperactive drumming style was a joy to listen to, but it didn't stop there, as he'd adopted a hooded/masked stage persona replete with a cage surrounding his drum kit. With Samson moving in a bluesier direction, Thunderstick departed and embarked on a short solo career, consisting of an EP and LP in the mid-eighties. The '84 album, Beauty And The Beasts, was a bit more in the hard rock mold with a slight punk edge, though that signature drumming could still be heard. By the late eighties the band was done, but in 2017, Purkis, saddened by the death of former vocalist Jodee Valentine a year earlier, decided to revive the Thunderstick name for a new album, Something Wicked This Way Comes.
