Stinking Lizaveta

An odd name for an odd band, that's for sure. This talented trio, consisting of two brothers on guitar and upright bass alongside a female drummer who all have been performing together since 1994, play what is probably best described as a cross between metal, blues, and jazz. But this is not a tech-y metal/fusion like others have attemped -- rather, this is a sort of loose, sweaty, smokey jazz that one might hear coming from a dusky night club on a Saturday night, melded with a hardened metal base. The sound is sparse (the guitars are not of the ultra-heavy, wall-of-sound type), yet intricate at the same time, often sounding improvisational even when they're not, with each of the three proving quite adept at their craft. There are no vocals here, but they aren't needed, as the songs twist and turn to keep things interesting yet still sound like complete, defined songs. By many reports their live shows are the stuff of legend, and some have said that that energy doesn't always translate to their records, but listening to Scream Of The Iron Iconoclast (their fifth album, released in 2007), one can clearly see what the fuss is about -- this is one of the most original bands currently on the scene.
