Slugdge

Slugdge has risen in stature relatively quickly, debuting in 2013 and, er, slugging it out for several years releasing self-financed albums until finally signing with Willowtip for 2018's Esoteric Malacology. Musically they slot in the intricate, technical, somewhat melodic blackened death metal camp, with a hint of sludge befitting their name. And then there's the elephant in the room -- or, in this case, the giant slug in the room, as their lyrics and imagery deal with slugs (including a bounty of slug puns in their song titles, and of course the band name itself). Yes, it's a gimmick, and just as with any band that employs any kind of less-than-serious gimmick, there's a segment of the listening public that downgrades the band for this reason alone (Nekrogoblikon is another contemporary band that faces this). Frankly, the music is plenty serious and the slug tie-ins are really an amusing side note and nothing more.
