Riverside

Riverside came together in 2001 when several players on the Polish scene found they had a common love for progressive metal (while Poland has no shortage of great metal bands, few well-known Polish bands play traditional prog metal), and have gone on to carve a successful career. This is a perfect example of a band who draws from several familiar influences in the prog rock/metal world (Dream Theater occasionally, Porcupine Tree and Pain Of Salvation are often mentioned by others as well), yet somehow avoid simply rehashing old ideas. Excellent musicianship abounds here, though this is not a band to overwhelm with overly flashy soloing or complex time changes, as this is a more relaxed form of progressive metal. Mariusz Duda's vocals are spot-on -- clear and melodic without going for high-pitched wails, and he's not afraid to let loose a punctuated roar now and again. Riverside is an elegant and inspiring progressive rock/metal band, highly recommended for fans of the genre.
