Old Funeral

Old Funeral is one of those footnote bands, notable more for featuring members who did better work elsewhere. In this case, those members would include Abbath of Immortal and Varg Vikernes of Burzum. The band recorded various demos and such from around 1989 until their breakup in 1992, and The Older Ones, released in 1999, is a compilation of such sessions, featuring various lineups (drummer Padden and guitarist Tore are the constants, the others came and went and are only featured on some of the songs here). Musically, this is really more death metal than black, save the vocals (some by Abbath, some by Padden) which are often the typical old school black metal rasps with some death growls as well. Since these were raw demos, the sound quality is below average, and really the songs were quite primitive for the most part, showing occasional glimpses of potential but in general this would be pretty forgettable if it weren’t for the players in question. The live album, Grim Reaping Norway, pulls together tracks from two 1991 gigs.
