Messiah

A cult Swiss extreme band from the 80's, Messiah generated a pretty healthy following in their early days despite being unsigned, the sales of their first two releases finally prompting them to sign with Noise Records in 1991. The album reviewed here is the debut, 1986's Hymn To Abramelin, arguably the band's most well-known album. The music is rather primitive thrash metal with clear pre-death metal tendencies (death metal had not yet matured then), a bit dated nowadays but quite extreme, and no doubt influential, in its time. The band managed several releases over the next decade, including their 1995 album Underground curiously including Therion main main Christofer Johnsson, before disbanding. They reformed in 2017 and as of early 2024 are still at it.
