Kerry King

Fresh off the retirement of Slayer (at least as an active touring/recording entity), founding guitarist Kerry King strikes out on his own, roping in several mostly Cali thrash veterans to help out. To no one's surprise, From Hell I Rise follows the blueprint of modern thrash that Slayer was doing late in their career, with Death Angel's Mark Osegueda even sounding vaguely like Tom Araya now and again. It's not pushing boundaries, and King himself stated he's simply playing the music he likes, and he's certainly earned that right. Yet this is more dynamic and alive than it could have been, maybe to some folk's surprise (or maybe not, this is Kerry King after all), so kudos to him for not just mailing it in.
