Ice Age
Ice Age formed in 1985 and, based on the strength of solid demos and
a healthy underground buzz, were frequently tapped as a Next Big Thing,
destined to follow in the footsteps of pioneers such as
Girlschool
and
Rock Goddess
as a standout all-female metal band.
But it was not meant to be, the group beset by management and personal
issues and revolving lineups
(including, for a spell,
Sentinel Beast
singer Debbie Gunn)
that eventually derailed the band by 1990.
24 years later, founding vocalist/guitarist Sabrina Kihlstrand and
bassist Vikki Larsson decided to make another go of it, eventually
recruiting new members (including, this time, a male drummer), and
finally in 2017 the long-awaited debut album,
Breaking The Ice, hit the shelves.
Whether the band can ever recapture the momentum from the early days
on a commercial level remains to be seen,
but credit the band for their perseverance to release music after all this
time, and the fact is that
Breaking The Ice justifies the early buzz.
Their style is melodic speed/thrash metal, with few nods to the
present but with a modern production and a professional attitude.
