Gillan

Gillan was one of two solo bands led by famed vocalist Ian Gillan following his departure from Deep Purple in the mid-seventies (the other, earlier, band went by the longer name Ian Gillan Band). They achieved great success in Europe and Japan (though not in America), but internally the band suffered from financial and personal problems, resulting in a relatively short run. Gillan himself drew the ire of his bandmates by disbanding the group for health reasons (his vocal chords required surgery, threatening his singing career) only to turn around and accept the offer to join Black Sabbath for that band's 1983 album Born Again. Later still, he went back to the rejuvenated Deep Purple, where, apart for a few years' absense, he has been active ever since.

Stylewise, Mr. Universe (the second album, released in 1979) more or less continues in the Purple vein (apparently not like his Ian Gillan Band work), though reportedly the mid-period albums were a bit heavier, owing a bit to the NWOBHM movement that was taking hold at the time.
