Carnarium
This Argentinian band dates back to 1993, at which time they played
straight death metal, as heard on their self-titled demo.
Gradually they started experimenting with more symphonic forms of extreme
metal, and by the time of their debut (and, to date, only full-length)
album
Constelaciones De Requiems in 2002, they had transformed into
a full-fledged gothic metal band.
Several of the hallmarks of gothic metal are at the forefront here --
classic beauty-and-the-beast vocals (graceful soprano female contrasted
with male death growls), keyboards aplenty (violins too?), and arrangements
on the busy and adventurous side.
The production is a bit thin, a slight detriment for a style where
rich, full instrumentation is a requirement.
Overall this is an album where the potential outweighs the realized songs
-- good ideas, but just not fleshed out yet.
Apparently the band still exists, though the lineup is markedly different
than the one that recorded
Constelaciones.
