Chalice

Like many bands from Australia, Chalice operated just a shade outside the mainstream, going for a less traditional and more unique sound. The style here was a mix of gothic, folk, and lighter progressive metal, with the folk element due to acoustic guitars and some tasteful flute playing. Shiralee Morgan's vocals were almost operatic at times, and while her voice wasn't quite as strong as others in this genre, she held her own. This wasn't crushing metal music -- the guitars were understated and the arrangements sparse, particularly on the Illusion album, yet there was a certain grace that permeated throughout, making for a pleasant listen. There were some good ideas here and plenty of quality musicianship, though at times the songs plodded a bit -- a bit more aggression and power might have been the answer. The band broke up in May 2007, with several of the members continuing in a new band called Black Orchid.
