Arkaea

This band is intimately involved in the ongoing drama that is Fear Factory -- at one point mainstays Christian Olbe Wolbers and Raymond Herrera wrote songs for the next FF album, but when vocalist Burton Bell reunited with Dino Cazares, that put Wolbers and Herrera as the odd men out. Enter Threat Signal vocalist Jon Howard (eventually followed by his bandmate, bassist Pat Kavanagh), and rather suddenly Arkaea was born, debuting in 2009 with Years In The Darkness. One might expect a late-period Fear Factory style crossed with a metalcore vocalist, and that describes Darkness to a T. Howard's a fairly typical metalcore vocalist, meaning plenty of shrieks along with modern clean 'core singing, and the guitars have that faint industrial/militaristic feel that Factory helped invent back in the day. There really isn't a lot of originality here, perhaps due to the fact that these guys really haven't been playing together as a unit for very long, and so far are relying on past influences and fame to get the ball rolling. Too soon to tell whether this band will develop a style of their own -- as for now, Years In The Darkness might satisfy the modern metalcore fan, as well as some Fear Factory fans, but these guys are probably capable of better.
