After Forever
The gothic/atmospheric doom metal has developed rather
nicely during the new millennium,
with one country leading the
charge being the Netherlands.
The Gathering
arguably set the standard, but other bands have been up to the task,
such as
Within Temptation,
Epica,
and the subject here, After Forever.
Their debut album, 2000's
Prison Of Desire, stands alongside
Tristania's
Beyond The Veil as two of the best of the field.
After Forever has slightly more classical and progressive
influences than others, and one of the best soprano vocalists
in all of metal in Floor Jansen -- she is the dominant vocalist
here, but the typical male death vocals pop up occasionally, and
a full choir adds texture to some of the songs as well.
The songs are slow to mid-paced, with a few occasional power metal
bursts (as on "Inimical Chimera"), with keyboards and guitars
intertwining quite nicely with Floor's flawless voice.
The band released several more fine albums throughout the next decade,
before finally deciding to hang it up in February 2009.
Floor Jansen formed her own band,
ReVamp,
and also landed the coveted lead singing spot in
Nightwish.
