Year Of No Light

Isis
is still one of the first bands one thinks of when describing
this sort of ambient-to-crushing-chords, atmospheric
experimental hardcore-laced doom, but even as they
themselves are straying from the style, a number of bands
are right behind them to keep the genre growing.
Year Of No Light rank with
Overmars
as the top French acts in the field, clearly closer to
Isis than they are to, say,
Neurosis, and the same sort
of accolades given to Overmars and others might apply
here -- these bands aren't clones of each other, but they
are cut from a similar cloth, and they all do a pretty
impressive job of maintaining high quality in their works.
Like the others, Year Of No Light might lose a few points
only because they're a few years behind being true innovators,
but they deserve credit for an impressive album nonetheless.
