Winds

Winds was initially conceived by pianist Andy Winter, who eventually fleshed out the band with three other members who have served time in such bands as Mayhem, Khold, Arcturus, The Kovenant, and others. Despite the impressive black metal pedigree, Winds is anything but black metal. Genre-wise, the best fit would be progressive metal, but Winds is not a typical prog metal band either, as there is very little emphasis on flashy musicianship or complex songwriting. Winds' style is instead a gentle, laidback, midpaced classically-influenced progressive style, with Winters' graceful piano work often the central focus. In Lars Eric Si, the band has the perfect vocalist to match the music -- his is a clear, unique midrange voice, not particularly powerful yet emotive in just the right way. The Imaginary Direction Of Time, the band's third and most recent album, is also their most adventurous, with a string quartet melding their work seemlessly with the rest of the band. The term "quiet metal" might sound like an oxymoron, but it's an apt description of what Winds is going for, and a most intriguing listen for those looking for a unique take on progressive metal.
