Voivod

From their humble noisy beginnings, Voivod developed
into one of the most unique and talented bands ever to grace the metal
field.
War And Pain and
Rrroooaaarrr were messy, chaotic thrash
albums, but
Killing Technology was the turning point,
as (in retrospect) one
can clearly hear the merging of the early thrash style with the
adventurousness of the later work, forging one of the most unique
sounds in metal.
The trio of albums consisting of
Killing Technology,
Dimension Hatross, and
Nothingface (regarded by many to be their best ever)
is clearly Voivod at their peak, brilliant, original works all.
Following
Nothingface
the band drifted into a more laidback style on the next two
albums, and following the less-than-well-received
Outer Limits,
longtime vocalist Denis Belanger departed, leaving the band status
in question.
In came new bassist/vocalist Eric Forrest, and
Voivod stormed back, bringing some of the bands mid-period
heaviness back into the fold on
Negatron and
Phobos.
Following Forrest's departure in early 2001
(he went on to form
E-Force
and is also part of the excellent
Project: Failing Flesh),
and a brief period
where the brand had broken up, Voivod officially announced the
return of Belanger on vocals and none other than
ex-Metallica
bassist Jason Newsted as the newest member of the band.
2003 saw the release of their new album, simply titled Voivod.
A stellar album from a stellar band, Voivod delivers what fans
had hoped for, with Belanger's trademark vocals in place, Newsted
providing a grinding bass foundation, and well-crafted songs that
harken to prime Voivod past (circa The Outer Limits) and
yet sound fresh and original.
The band had been working on a new album in 2005 when the shocking
and sad news came of the passing of guitarist Denis "Piggy" D'Amour.
Widely regarded as a unique and influential guitarist, he is still
missed by the metal community.
It was his wish that his recorded guitar parts be used after
his death, and indeed the band used those parts on their recent
recordings, 2006's Katorz and 2009's
Infini.
Finally, with original bassist Jean-Yves Theriault (known to all as
Blacky) and new guitarist Daniel Mongrain in the fold, Voivod are
pressing forward yet again.
