Unexpect
The highly eclectic Canadian band Unexpect debuted in 1999 with
a self-financed effort entitled
Utopia, itself a unique and
hard-to-describe album but almost conventional compared to their
following works.
Essentially a black/gothic metal hybrid, the album featured
complex riffing, a host of vocal styles, and a general flair for
the dramatic.
It wold be five years before the band, with a modified lineup,
managed to record again, putting out a stopgap EP
(
We, Invaders), followed by
In A Flesh Aquarium, released in the summer of 2006.
By this time the band had truly gone off the rails, an over-the-top
cavalcade of experimental metallic weirdness, containing songs
so twisted and yet not without a central purpose.
This is a baffling band, and most assuredly a difficult one to
grasp, but the efforts are well rewarded.
