Underoath

Hailing from Florida,
Underoath has released several albums to date, with the third one,
2002's
THe Changing Of Times,
reviewed here (apparently the first two are
somewhat different from
the following description).
Anyway,
Times is a Christian emo/metalcore album,
with a pretty good sense of melody and pace in the songs.
The vocals, however, are a detriment to these ears -- extreme
singing is fine, but Dallas Taylor screams every word the same
way, at the same volume, reducing his vocals to a single screechy
blur
(though, to be fair, there are a couple of isolated clean vocals
here that work well, as in "When The Sun Sleeps").
As it turns out, he has since left the band, so perhaps the situation
is better with new singer Spencer Chamberlain at the mic.
Underoath has a pretty good following in the Christian metalcore
scene, and may yet continue to grow in popularity.
