Theatre Of Tragedy  

Several bands employ the male death with female soprano vocal style (somewhat humorously labeled "beauty and the beast vocals"), and while Theatre Of Tragedy may not have been the first to do it, they were one of the pioneers of this style of atmospheric gothic metal, and a frequent influence and yardstick for similar bands. The Norwegians have enjoyed a stellar career thus far, though varied, as the band has never recorded two studio albums with the same lineup, nor really in the same style either, with the early material solidly in the doomdeath field, moving to Tiamat-styled atmospheric/gothic (Aegis) and then, most dramatically, the shift to techno on Musique and Assembly, where the band retains few ties to their metal past. Despite the differing styles, the albums uniformly are of high quality -- Theatre Of Tragedy is a classy band.

Longtime vocalist Liv Kristine Espenæs left the band in late 2003, citing personal differences that could not be resolved. She has since hooked up with the members of the German band Atrocity (including her husband, Alex Krull) in a new project called Leaves' Eyes. Theatre Of Tragedy carried on with a new vocalist, Nell Sigland, formerly of a band called The Crest.

The band has recently announced their intent to disband in October 2010.
