Reverend is the band formed by vocalist David Wayne after his initial departure from Metal Church in the late eighties. Among the new band were two members from the LA band Heretic, which ironically was also the band that featured Wayne's replacement in Metal Church, that being Mike Howe. This lineup had four releases, with a style that unsurprisingly wasn't terribly different from mid-period MC. The band faded away in the mid-nineties, and then Wayne re-appeared in Metal Church (who also had been quiet for several years), singing on the band's comeback album Masterpeace.

In 2000, Wayne decided to resurrect Reverend, recruiting an entirely new lineup. A four-track EP, A Gathering Of Demons, was later released, again featuring a power metal style with characteristicly fine vocals from Wayne, though the tone here is a bit darker in the past. Wayne also formed another project/group, this one simply entitled Wayne, and that band's album was ironically called Metal Church, a move that has caused much mudslinging between him and his old bandmates.

Reverend was an on-again, off-again venture for several years. Wayne's last venture was to once again usurp the name of his former band, touring and promoting his new band as David Wayne's Metal Church. With his unfortunate passing in the spring of 2005, Reverend was finished. Several of his then-current bandmates continued playing in his honor, but no future recordings came of this.
