The Provenance

This highly original band originated from the city of Gothenburg, but didn't play the sort of metal often associated with that city. By the time of Still At Arm's Length, the band's second album released in 2003, they were in the gothic metal camp. But starting with How Would You Like To Be Spat At (and continuing with its similar successor, Red Flags), The Provenance moved into uncharted territories, playing a hypnotic sort of experimental, dark, post-prog-goth-art metal, with occasional hints to their gothic metal past but more often moving forward, with occasional relaxed jazzy influences among the many outside forces comprising this unique style, yet it's a style that sounds cohesive rather than a mishmash of disparate influences. Emma Hellström's vocals are a wonder, clear and emotive but not ethereal as a lot of female vocals are, and guitarist Tobias Martinsson's backing (and occasional lead) vocals are similarly clear, the pair working off each other expertly. This band earns high points for originality -- there isn't any other band that really sounds like this, truly a rarity in a world where most bands religiously follow a style or trend. They decided to amicably break up in December 2008.
