Nightwish  


Nightwish is unquestionably Finland's most popular metal band, as their symphonic, classically-influenced power metal has reigned supreme in Europe almost since their first album's release in 1997. Though the band as a whole is a tight unit, the star here is vocalist Tarja Turunen. A truely opera-trained vocalist, her crystal-clear voice is a joy and a wonder to behold. At a time where several excellent female vocalists have recently arrived on the metal scene, Tarja remains the standard by which all others are measured. The band really hasn't varied their style much from album to album, opting to stick to, and perfect, a formula for success that has served them well thus far.

In a rather stunning move, the band parted ways with Tarja, citing business and personal differences. The announcement apparently was a surprise to Tarja herself, who now intends to move on to other projects. After an exhaustive search, a new vocalist has been found, that being Anette Olzon from the Swedish AOR band Alyson Avenue. The first album with Anette, Dark Passion Play, was released in the fall of 2007.
