Nightmare

There was a handful of decent French bands in the early
eighties, but most of them sung in French and stuck to
French labels, thus limiting their worldwide appeal.
Nightmare sung in English, and after a successful opening
gig for
Def Leppard
in 1983, signed to Ebony Records for their first two
releases.
But various problems, ranging from musical differences to
record label difficulties to the failing health of their then-singer,
proved too much for the band, and by 1987 they were
essentially done.
Twelve years later (1999), a new lineup came together, led by former
drummer turned singer Jo Amore, and the band was back
in business, the new Nightmare debuting with an EP featuring
a dedication to their fallen ex-vocalist, who passed away that
year.
Since then the band has prospered, with two strong releases
including their most recent, the concept album
Silent Room.
Melodic power metal is the order of the day here, but with a few
twists of their own to keep from sounding tired (some tasteful
backing choirs on a few choruses, for example, give the band
a slight gothic edge).
Amore has a gritty yet powerful voice that suits the style well,
forceful yet not overbearing.
Nightmare has produced a fine album here, and hopefully can
continue to excel in the French metal scene.
