Napalm Death  

Napalm Death is one of the founding fathers of grindcore, that subdivision of death metal consisting of very short, very fast, chaotic blurs of noise. Their debut album, Scum, is a landmark in the field, but is also notable since not one, not two, but three different members left after that album and formed enormously influential and successful bands in their own (these being Bill Steer, who founded Carcass, Lee Dorrian (Cathedral), and Justin Broadrick (Godflesh)). By 1990's Harmony Corruption a largely different lineup was in place (in fact, soon after the band had completed a complete makeover, with no remaining original members), and while the focus slightly shifted from grindcore to death metal, they still set standards for brutality in extreme music. The later nineties showed the band almost in thrash mode, but following their split from Earache Records, they have returned (at least in part) to their grindcore roots.
