Mistreater

The eighties were full of bands like Mistreater, bands who managed to record a self-financed album or two and play to their local fan base, but never achieve any major claim to fame. Hell's Fire, recorded in 1981, shows a youthful band bent on bashing out straightforward rock/metal, with a 70's-influenced style that doesn't bring anyone in particular to mind but somehow is as familiar and comfortable as one's favorite shoes. Though they were far too obscure to influence others, it's clear that the current crop of stoner bands are influenced by bands like this. Even during their time information on the members was hard to come by, even more so now, relegating Hell's Fire to long-lost gem status. A second album, Swami, was recorded some six years later, and while the basic style of the band remained more or less intact, somehow the album lacked the impact of its predecessor.
