Marilyn Manson
One of the more controversial figures in metal, Marilyn Manson
has parlayed his combination of shock-rock imagery and
industrial-tinged metal into a successful career, complete with
all the ups and downs and attention-grabbing headlines one might
expect given his visual appearance and general moodiness.
The band formed in Florida in 1989, and spent their formative
years as Marilyn Manson And The Spooky Kids, releasing various
private cassettes along the way, before attracting the attention
of Trent Reznor, who eventually helped sign the band to Nothing
Records.
Musically, Nine Inch Nails is a clear influence, Manson fusing
harsh guitars with electronics and a sinister edge similar to
NIN.
The member name convention (combining the first name of a female
pop icon with the last name of a serial killer) is admittedly
a tad clever.
A band/career like this seems destined to burst into flames at
some point, but as of now Marilyn Manson is doing quite well.
