Kong

Kong is without a doubt one of the most original and unique bands featured on these pages, and an absolute BNR favorite. They specialize in all-instrumental, complex arrangements which often feature the four members playing riffs totally different from each other, as if they are all playing different songs (but yet it works). Sometimes they opt for heavy riffing, other times quieting down, and still other times they dabble in sampling and industrial influences. There really isn't a single band that sounds much like Kong. The production on the first two albums suffers a bit, though by Push Comes To Shove that had been corrected. They present a unique view live as well, with each member occupying a different corner of the venue, effectively surrounding the audience. Predictably, a band of this nature would tend to stray into more experimental (read: less metal) directions as they matured, and that indeed occured, as Earmined started the progression away from their past and Freakcontrol continued it, delving into techno/house rhythms more than anything metallic. They formally disbanded sometime in 2003, but bassist bassist Mark Drillich revived the band four years later with a new lineup. A comeback album, What It Seems Is What You Get, capturing the spirit of the earlier works, was released in 2009.
