Isis

Isis was the band led by Aaron Turner, who himself is the
main man behind Hydrahead Records.
Their early efforts find them in an experimental mode, with
the debut full-length
Celestial being a rather bizarre
yet intriguing post-hardcore album,
a bit strange in places but definitely a compelling listen.
The followups,
Oceanic and
Panopticon, found the band honing their dense,
post-apocalyptic hardcore soundscapes, and might be the closest
album to prime
Neurosis
since, well, Neurosis themselves
(
Cult Of Luna also is in this ballpark).
Like Neurosis, Isis understood the value of quiet and subtlety,
how the most intense moments are made all the more so by surrounding
them with sparse moments.
Turner's vocals were harsh, but the are often a bit behind in the mix,
making them less grating and more a part of the music rather than
overwhelming the songs.
In time Isis turned out to be as influential as their mentors
Neurosis, if not more so, spawning an increasingly large number
of followers.
In May 2010 they announced their breakup, having accomplished all they
had set out to do.
