Girlschool  

Though the Runaways are often considered one of the earliest all-female hard rock bands, Girlschool took matters to the next level, making it clear that they were no novelty act and that their music, not their image, was what mattered. Moreover, Girlschool has always been about metal, not poppy hard rock (except for a brief mid-career spell). Formed in 1978 as Painted Lady (an early incarnation of the band featured American guitarist Kathy Valentine, later to find fame and fortune in the Go-Gos), Girlschool's rough early NWOBHM style scored big, with 1981's Hit And Run climbing to #5 in the British charts. Maintaining ties to Motorhead didn't hurt the band either, as the two collaborated on several projects together and toured together frequently in those days. But the mid-eighties were tough times for the band, as they never acheived the same level of commercial success again, and following some poorly-received releases, they folded in 1988. They came back together in 1992 and have sporadically played live over the years, and have recorded as late as 2004 (Believe).

Trivia note: founding drummer Denise Dufort is the sister of drummer Dave Dufort, who appeared on the seminal Angel Witch debut album.
