The God Machine

An interesting trio from the early nineties, The God Machine originated in San Diego, then decided to move to London, where they eventually signed to Fiction Records. A reviewer once described their sound as a cross between Janes Addiction, Kyuss, and Soundgarden, which is a reasonable description, as they don't sound directly like any of the three, but elements of each can be heard. This was truly a fascinating and unique band, able to effortlessly fuse almost tribal drumming, hard guitars and spacey atmospherics, with vocals both forceful (a la Perry Farrell, hence the Janes comparison) and soft and emotive. Their career was tragically cut short in 1994 when bassist Jimmy Fernandez passed away shortly after recording their second album, with the remaining two members deciding they could not continue. Guitarist Robin Proper-Sheppard later formed a differently-styled band called Sophia. This is a band well worth tracking down.
