The Gathering  


Though originally a doomdeath band (notably on the debut, Always), The Gathering's fortunes took a turn for the better with the arrival of Anneke van Giersbergen and the subsequent release of their landmark album Mandylion. Here the band have relied less on grinding rhythms and more on atmospherics and emotion (somewhat similar to the style change by Tiamat on Wildhoney), a progression that continued on the ambitious and diverse How To Measure A Planet?, as well as the recent if_then_else and Souvenirs. The Gathering continue to push the envelope of atmospheric metal, and they continue to be an innovative and highly interesting band.

In a surprising move, Anneke has decided to step down from the band, desiring to pursue new musical projects (she already has a new band in place). Her last performance with The Gathering will take place on August 4th in Finland.
