Falconer  

Falconer was formed by guitarist Stefan Weinerhall following the breakup of his previous band, Mithotyn. Mithotyn was a decent black metal band whose most distinctive characteristics were various Viking/folklore influences, which lent the band a bit of originality. While Falconer is a straight-ahead power metal band, those influences appear here as well, with similar results -- the traditional metal field is quite saturated in Europe right now, but Falconer manages to stand just a bit apart from their many contemporaries by seemlessly blending those influences with a traditional power metal base. Weinerhall's guitarwork is excellent, but the prize here might be vocalist Mathias Blad, whose clear, midrange vocals occasionally are strangely reminiscient of Jethro Tull, again managing to stay within the metal mold without sounding derivative (Blad later left the band, though he has since returned).
