Elvenking

Elvenking was formed in October 1997 by two friends (guitarists Aydan and Jarpen) with the goal of mixing traditional metal with folk melodies. Skyclad is the recognized pioneer in this field, and a suitable starting point in describing Elvenking's debut album, Heathenreel. Both bands are clearly in the same ballpark, with the differences being Damnagoras' vocals here, as his high-pitched melodic voice is a marked contrast to Martin Walkyier's venomous rapid-fire delivery that he had in Skyclad. Elvenking's folk influences are more prominent as well, with well-integrated flutes, violins, and acoustic guitars complementing mid-to-fast-paced guitar melodies. In general, Heathenreel is a lighter, more airy version of folk metal, catchy and well executed and a fine debut album from an up-and-coming band. Note: apparently they have taken a less folky, more modern metal approach on their more recent albums.
