Against Nature  

The lineup of Against Nature is precisely the first album lineup of Revelation, a prime mover in the DC area doom movement of the mid-nineties. That band eventually broke up and has since reformed as a studio project (with two of the guys here playing in that band as well), while this band moves forward on its own. Comparing this band to the Revelation of old, it's a case of some things being the same and others not. Doom is still the order of the day here, but Against Nature is slower, sparser, with almost a spacey vibe going with the fuzzy, downtuned guitars. This isn't the wall-of-sound, crushing doom that some bands play -- rather, it's almost subdued in its approach, with John Brenner's vocals rather meandering at times (his is not a classic doom metal voice, but it fits well here), coupled with a recording sound that feels like it's straight from 1970. At times the songs drag a bit, though when they go for a bit more upbeat tempo ("Bolt" for example), things do pick up. Certainly not a contemporary band, but they do have a unique style that's worth a listen.

This has got to be the most prolific band in recent memory, as they have released no less than nine full-length albums in only four years!
